Many expectations surround Biden and his new policies. Last month, the Biden immigration bill was introduced in Congress.
Our current immigration system is deeply unfair. Hard-working people have lived in America for decades without being able to become LPRs. This is deeply unjust. Aspiring Americans that come to work deserve to have a chance. They love this country as much as any American. They deserve to be citizens.
Our current system penalizes them. It pursues them. And it benefits from them. Undocumented migrants pay taxes but receive little in return.
This must stop.
That’s why President Biden presented a migration reform. The measure seeks more humane solutions for migration. The U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021 is Biden’s letter of introduction for his presidency on migration. Here, we will review its main points for you.
Probably the most impactful feature of the bill is that it provides a pathway for citizenship. President Biden’s immigration bill proposes to speed up U.S. citizen status acquisition. It allows undocumented persons to apply for temporary legal status. It would allow them to apply for citizenship after five years. Of course, background checks apply. As well, all Green Card holders may apply for citizenship after three years.
Thus, if you’re a TPS beneficiary, you might be able to apply for a green card. If you came here to work and build your future, you will have a chance.
Another main goal of the President Biden immigration bill in Congress is protecting families. It will create a favorable environment for family groups. Thus, it seeks to avoid family separation. Further, it will also foster reunification. The bill seeks to reduce backlogs. Thus, it will eliminate lengthy wait times and country-limits. All these measures tend to separate families.
One key measure is family-based green card applications. How? Families will remain together in the US through a temporary protection while they wait their green card.
The Biden immigration bill seeks to promote diversity. Thus, it will look to increase the number of visas granted for this reason. Further, it looks to limit discrimination on religious grounds.
It will also reduce backlog on employment applications. Applicants for certain visas, such as the H1-B, can even wait for 5-7 years for their approval. This is insane. Thus, it ends per country caps. This is the main reason behind the backlogs. The bill also makes easier for STEM graduates in our universities to stay here. Further, it will also give work authorization for H1-B dependents.
Further, the bill also seeks to protect from exploitation Decent working conditions must be guaranteed. It increases access to U Visa relief. Further, it increases penalties over employers.
Border control and judicial system
Further, on the downside, border control will be emphasized. This, the bill says, is to prioritize the safety of U.S. citizens and migrants. President Biden immigration bill seeks to strengthen the border with technology and infrastructure.
Thus, it would seek border personnel training. This will be improved with the advice of experts and greater funding. Thus, U.S. agencies would be coordinated to end human and drug smuggling networks. Plus, FBI, DHS, and DEA will improve their border operations.
The bill also aims to get on the roots of mass immigration from Central America. It will fund studies in order to determine its causes. The bill provides $4 billion funding. Further, it seeks to create measures those looking for protection from their states.
It also seeks to promote an effective judicial system to deal with immigration cases. This includes:
– Family management programs.
– Reduction of backlogs.
– Training for judges.
– Migration courts tech.
Further, it grants protection to those pursuing refuge or asylum in the country. U, T, and VAWA visa protection is increased. The U visa cap will increase to 30,000. Further, now there’s no one year deadline to apply for asylum. You can apply at any time.
The bill aims at what would seem to be one of the main strengths of the Biden administration. Thus, it promotes, above all, the creation of a new system where solid integration stands out.
Respect for families will prevail.
After four difficult years, this bill might improve your situation if it becomes law. It might help some to regularize their situation. For others, it will open a pathway toward citizenship.

UPDATE: The bill has failed to become law. But that does not mean it was a bad idea. All good laws came from ideas that may have failed, and things we consider normal were once considered extreme. This proposal is no different – it may never have had a chance to pass, but it provides a vision. One that we cannot afford to lose, and one which we must continue to fight for.
